Artists selected to work on new Ravensthorpe Library & Information Centre

Artists Lesley Fallais and Jane Revitt have been selected to work on a creative engagement project related to the building of a new Library & Information Centre (LIC) in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury.  Jane and Lesley will be using creative methods and activities to involve local residents in developing ideas for a series of artworks for the new building.  Both artists have already worked with Loca and the LIC team on the new Library Information & Children’s Centre building in Rawthorpe and Dalton where they worked on the colour scheme for the outside of the building and designed features/artworks for the windows and external walls.  Jane and Lesley will be out and about on the streets of Ravensthorpe to involve local residents and get them involved in the project.  See our separate web page to keep in touch with the project:  Ravensthorpe in Colour.

A chance to meet informally with other creative people to pick up ideas, information and contacts which may be useful in your work.  Come along and hear from two interesting speakers who will be talking about 'getting beyond networking'.

One of our aims over the next twelve months is to create a supportive, well connected and active community of creative people in the Colne Valley.  Through Loca’s Business Support work in the Colne Valley over the last year informal networking is happening more amongst local creative practitioners, but it could be more productive by stimulating opportunities for peer support and co-mentoring, new creative collaborations and joint exhibition and promotion of work.  January’s Colne Valley Connections will look at moving beyond informal networking to networking which is more purposeful and pro-active.  We’ll hear examples of creative networks that have evolved from being loose-knit groups which share information and offer informal support into working groups that are actively developing work/business opportunities and delivering creative projects.

Lucy Gibson – Audience Development Coordinator at Axis, artist and Advisory Board member for the NAN initiative (Networking Artists’ Networks) - will discuss why networking between creative people is so important and some of the difficulties of working as a project group. She’ll bring inspiring examples of the kinds of collaborative projects that have been successful both regionally and nationally and a little about what NAN has achieved so far.

Denby Dale Pie Sculpture Project

60 young people from three local schools in Denby Dale have been working with artist Mike Disley to carve stone paving blocks for a sculpture and landscape scheme in the village centre.  The scheme will create a distinctive new landmark on the traffic island at the junction of Wakefield Road and Cumberworth Road.  Inspired by Denby Dale’s famous pies, the sculpture will be accompanied by new planting and lighting, and will be surrounded by paving which will have the young people’s carved triangles set into it.

The scheme is due to be finished for spring 2010.  Between now and then Mike will be working on the sculpture at Marshalls quarry just down the road at Shepley, and he hopes to invite some of the young people to see the sculpture taking shape.

The sculpture project is part of a wider programme of village centre improvements being undertaken with funding from Kirklees Council’s regeneration budget.  It is being managed by Loca, in partnership with the Regeneration Development Service.
